Man ID’d in CHP shooting
CORONA, CA (BDCi) – The man who was shot and killed by a CHP officer on the 91 Freeway Tuesday night has been identified.

He is 59-year-old Gary Dean Heil, KTLA reports. Officers came to the scene of a 2004 Porsche Cayenne that had crashed, just after 7:45pm, headed east on the 91 between Main Street and the 15 freeway. They say that upon arrival they saw a man with a gun on the side of the road.

Heil was told to drop the his weapon but refused and instead fired at the officers, at which point they were prompted to return fire.

All four eastbound lanes and two of the westbound lanes were closed during the ten-hour investigation, causing severe congestion and major delays.

The Corona Police Department and CHP are conducting concurrent investigations into the shooting.

As per standard procedure, the involved officers are being placed on administrative leave while the investigation is underway.
